Your switchboard is your home’s first line of protection

Every circuit in your home runs through the switchboard. A modern board with circuit breakers and safety switches cuts the power in a fraction of a second when something goes wrong. An old board with ceramic fuses can’t do that.

Plenty of homes in Altona Meadows, Laverton and the older parts of Werribee still have their original boards. Even in newer estates, boards fill up fast once you add air conditioning, an EV charger, solar or a battery.

Safety switches, also called RCDs, watch for electricity leaking to earth, which is what happens when someone gets a shock. They switch off fast enough to save lives. Energy Safe Victoria recommends testing them once a year with the Test button.

Signs your switchboard needs attention

If you notice any of these, book an inspection. If you smell burning or see scorch marks, call straight away.

  • Ceramic fuses or fuse wire instead of circuit breakers
  • No safety switches, or only one for the whole house
  • Safety switches that trip often
  • A burning smell, scorch marks or a warm board
  • Lights that flicker when appliances start
  • Black, brittle or crumbling wiring
  • An old board backed with asbestos sheet
  • No spare room for new circuits

How a switchboard upgrade works

We start with an inspection. We look at the board, the main cable coming in and the circuits leaving it, and we test what’s there. Then we explain what you need in plain English and give you a written quote.

On the day, the power has to be off for part of the job. We plan the work so it’s off for as short a time as possible, and tell you in advance how long to expect.

Switchboard work is prescribed electrical work in Victoria, so it’s checked by an independent Licensed Electrical Inspector. You receive your Certificate of Electrical Safety after that inspection. If your old board is backed with asbestos, we flag it upfront and explain how it will be handled safely.

Renting out your property? Victorian rental minimum standards require a modern switchboard with circuit breakers and safety switches. See our rental safety checks.

Switchboard questions

Ask a question, no obligation
How much does a switchboard upgrade cost?

It depends on the size of your home, how many circuits you have, the condition of the wiring and whether the main cable needs work. Every job is quoted after we’ve looked at it.

How long does it take?

Most upgrades are done in a day. We tell you how long the power will be off before we start.

Do I need safety switches if I have circuit breakers?

Yes. Circuit breakers protect the wiring from overloads. Safety switches protect people from electric shock. You need both.

Is my switchboard ready for solar or an EV charger?

Not always. We check the spare capacity and the main cable before adding big new loads, and tell you if an upgrade is needed first.
