Finding the real cause, not just the symptom
Electrical faults are frustrating. The power trips at random, half the kitchen goes dead, or a light flickers only when it rains. Resetting the switch might work for a day, but the fault is still there.
We use proper test equipment to narrow it down circuit by circuit. Common culprits are a faulty appliance, water in an outdoor power point or light, a loose connection, or damaged cable in the walls or roof.
Once we find it, we explain what’s wrong and what it will take to fix, then repair it so it stays fixed.
Common faults we track down
If you’ve noticed any of these, book a fault finding visit. If you see sparks or smell burning, call us straight away.
- The safety switch trips when it rains
- Power trips when a certain appliance is on
- One room or circuit has no power
- Lights flicker or buzz
- Power points that only work sometimes
- A switch that feels warm
- Partial power across the house
- Faults that started after a storm
How fault finding works
Tell us what’s happening and when. Details like “it trips when the dishwasher runs” or “only after rain” help us find it faster.
On site we test each circuit and the appliances on it. Often we can isolate a faulty appliance by unplugging things one at a time. Hidden faults in walls or the roof take more testing.
We tell you what we found and the cost to fix it before we do the repair. Many faults are fixed on the spot.
Before you call, try unplugging everything on the circuit that trips, then reset the safety switch. If it holds, plug things back in one at a time. If one appliance trips it, that appliance is the likely cause.
Sparks, burning smell or tripping power? Call immediately.
If it’s safe, turn the power off at the main switch and keep everyone clear of anything damaged. Then call us. We’re on call 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
Fault finding questions
Ask a question, no obligationWhy does my safety switch keep tripping?
It’s doing its job: detecting electricity leaking to earth. Common causes are a faulty appliance, moisture in an outdoor fitting or damaged wiring. Read our guide to a tripping safety switch.
Can you find faults that come and go?
Yes, though they can take longer. Tell us when it happens and we’ll plan the testing around that.
Is it safe to keep resetting the switch?
Once or twice to check is fine. If it keeps tripping, leave it off and call us. Never tape or force a switch on.
How much does fault finding cost?
It depends on how long it takes to find the fault. We explain how we charge before we start.
