Working smoke alarms save lives

A smoke alarm is one of the cheapest life-saving devices in your home, but only if it works. Alarms wear out, batteries go flat and dust gets in. Many homes we visit have alarms that are past their expiry date or not working at all.

In Victoria, homes built after 1 August 1997 need hard-wired smoke alarms with battery backup. Hard-wired alarms must be installed and replaced by a licensed electrician.

Fire Rescue Victoria recommends alarms in every bedroom and living area, interconnected so they all sound when one goes off. That way you hear the alarm wherever the fire starts.

When to check or replace your smoke alarms

Look for the expiry or manufacture date on the side of each alarm.

  • The alarm is past its expiry date
  • It chirps even with a new battery
  • It doesn’t sound when you press Test
  • The case has turned yellow or brown
  • Your alarms aren’t interconnected
  • Bedrooms have no alarm nearby
  • You’ve renovated or added rooms
  • A rental is due for its annual check

Smoke alarms in rental properties

Since 25 November 2025, Victorian rental providers must arrange a smoke alarm safety check at least once every 12 months for every rental agreement. Alarms must be correctly installed, working and tested according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

We do these checks for landlords and property managers across Wyndham and Hobsons Bay, and can book them together with the two-yearly electrical safety check. A faulty alarm is an urgent repair, so if one fails we replace it on the spot where we can.

You get a written record of each check for your files.

Smoke alarm questions

Ask a question, no obligation
Do I need hard-wired smoke alarms?

Homes built after 1 August 1997 need hard-wired alarms with battery backup. Older homes can use battery alarms, but hard-wired, interconnected alarms are the safer choice.

Can I install a hard-wired smoke alarm myself?

No. Hard-wired alarms connect to your mains power, so a licensed electrician must install them.

How often should smoke alarms be tested?

Press the Test button regularly and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Rental properties must have a smoke alarm safety check at least every 12 months.

How many smoke alarms do I need?

It depends on the layout of your home. Fire Rescue Victoria recommends one in every bedroom and living area, interconnected.
